  How ancient is that?

Why 5555? Why not 911? Or was that a local emergency number?

I grew up in Amsterdam and I do not ever remember there being a 5555 emergency number. Maybe it was an inhouse emergency number.

It had to be, like an extension. I'm only wondering why it wasn't a little shorter... "Gee, Bob's hair's on fire! But did I dial three 5's or all four??"

keep dialing '5' until someone shows up or Bob's hair is burned off.

But too many 5's and you might get that fat secretary on floor 7 who can't even get the boss's coffee... what good would that do?

Worse yet, what if she IS the emergency contact?

"His hair's on fire? Well that don't sound good. Didja try putting it out yet?"

At a steel plant I used to work at the inhouse emergency line was 666. I 'm thinking that was a poor choice for the number. "Hello ... Satan.... are you there?"

Wow, yeah.. bad choice. At my school we used to have a bus that was number 666. I think someone must have complained because they changed it a few years after I left.

We used to have a "short bus" that we used to take to ski team races. This backfiring beast was appropriately numbered "69". Driving up to Lake placid early one morning this this backfired to bad the discharge lit up the woods like a bolt of lightning. Friggin bus 69

hehehe... sidebar story. Back in high school, my friend had a 58 Willys with a super hurrican flathead 6 cylinder... get it rolling down the hill with the engine off, engine in neutral and the accelerator to the floor... put the shift into third and pop the clutch... KABANG!!!! The whole back of the truck would lite up like the 4th of July!!! Good times!
