Is the grainyness/noise by design? Or doesn't the Kodak work well with longer exposures, or by the same token with the ISO on higher settings? I'm still mulling over a camera upgrade.

No that wasn't by design. I can't remember if I set the camera to iso 800 or not, but anyway night shots sometimes have a lot of noise. I think the only way you can avoid that is to get a digital SLR.
