Has anyone seen any pics of the 1950s bridge-jacking operation on the internet? Holy crap, that would've been something to see...

i have quite a few in hans van der aa book "gateway to the world" the bridge remained open during the entire operation, temporary baily bridges were used simply as a bypass when the jacking was actually happening, the swap of the spans over the seaway was done overnight, the old span was jacked onto 14 rails and the new span was built on these rails, one night they simply pushed the old bridge out and slid the new one in, the new bridge had aditional steel legs underneath to allow for the concrete piers to be made taller, the steel was temporary. at this time the JC bridge still had only 2 lanes, the rest of the bridge was reserved for a tramway servitude that was never used

it's such a shame trams disappeared from the Montreal area... :( And now lulu and his "lucide" gang wants to bring them back for the Cité-du-havre project. Plus ça change, plus c'est pareil...

but what was really funny was the fact they built a tramway line on the jacques cartier and for 25+ years it sat, never used
