Can you explain what a CB telephone is?

It's a TelePhone that operates on the citizens' band like a walkie talkie. Think of it as a very very early cellphone - except calls were usually operator connected.

Made good sense for locations with no phone lines in or out, and adverse weather conditions... Like an island.

Oh, also they are sometimes just a regular phone, with no ability to dial. Operator connected.

'CB' is Central Battery. Go off-hook and the operator knows you are there, because you have looped the line. These were a great advancement over magneto lines, where you had to crank the handle to generate ring to signal the operator.

CB systems also eliminated the need to replace battery sets at your house.

Ah not the radio phones we are used to in the UK then for island / non line use.

Cool.
