  whaat does CB stand for?

Central Battery. It refers to the Power Supply and switching method.

You lift the phone, flick the cradle a few times to get operator attention and ask for the number / location you want put through to. Even large exchanges used batteries (And still do) as they supply exceptionally stable power and have an inherant uninteruptable quality.

  like a CB radio right?

I'm a little puzzled about that... In the UK we had CB phones which were just basically radio phones based on the Citizen's Band...

But I think here we are talking about something else - a hardwired phone with no dialing mechanism.

It's one or the other!! :-))

No, a Central Battery phone system is an old technology. It used to be used in North America up until the 60's or so. Basically, the user can't dial a number, they pick up the phone and get an operator who then completes your call.

It's 100% not the same as a CB radio.
