a hudson 4-8-4 named empress

  she was a non streamlined hudson that was used in everyday service, the "royal hudson" out west was not the actual one that carried the royal party, the true royal hudson is in st constant. that car is a retired go transit coach built by hawker siddeley. they ones serviciing the st hilaire line had to have 2 doors per coach modified to work on the high platforms of central station

  wrong on both accounts a hudson is always 4-6-4 , they were the workhorses of the cp rail. after the royal tour on the one that is in st constant the cp applied to be allowed to call all its streamlined hudsons "royal" bearing the royal crowns. this one was one of the un streamlined ones who was used in the end on mundane commuter runs into the 60s, she was first retired to the glenn yards as a stationary boiler to keep cps passenger trains warm in the winter (pre hep days) that was her first time saved, then being shipped and restored to static display condition saved her again, she was finally repatriated to canada and is one of only 4 surviving hudsons, 1 is an american built alco, the other 3 are canadian built mlw ones. the one in bc a streamlined one became part of bc rails fleet and was used regularly till her boiler tube inspection failed, the other streamliner is as i said in st constant and is a special loco. this one is a great example of an everyday loco that was used into the 60s. we dont think to preserve the mundane, one day hyundai ponys will be worth more than porsches!

  Hey Atomic Garden, the 4-6-4 is known as the Hudson, the 4-8-4 is known as the Northern, But if i am not mistaken, the 2-8-2's are, or were, the workhorse of most of the railroads, including the CP.
There were some 4-8-4 Northerns that did high speed, heavy freight, as did the
4-6-6-4 Challengers, and various others.
