  It's a pass-thru gate, allows the water to flow around the lock.

  Proper name for this is a spillway. Lachine Canal has them, too.

  the seaways lingo since it had gates is "regulating works" a spillway is passive and has a set water level like the intermediate pool in beauharnois

  the soulanges canal is spectacular the bridge abutments where the swivel bridges used to rest when turned are all stone too, one is slowly falling into the canal, the powerdam looks like a castle, gorgeous
