Heh, looks like it's wired up to an old television antenna via roachclips. That's economical.

They are alligator clips. Intended purpose was for wires.

Those old Radio Shack/Realistic sets are pretty cool. Too bad it's in such bad shape.

I just noticed that the shortwave radio was next to two old cordless phones (probably 49Mhz type phones). Any possibility that there was some eavesdropping going on there? I mean, come on, everyone with a scanner radio back in those days used to pick up a phone call or two every once in a while...

That's a shortwave rig and it most likely only went up to 30MHz. Most police scanners cover the freqs for the old 49MHz cordless phones but you really don't hear much on those freqs anymore.
SOME, and I almost want to say that very few old cordless phones could be used to eavesdrop on other cordless phones by using the handset and unplugging the base. I had one that did that, but you couldn't really get it to "scan". As a side note, old 800MHz Motorola flip phones could be used for eavesdropping if they had a certain version of firmware instealled on them
BTW, yes, I am a ham and a radio dork so I spend a lot of time learning about this crap.

Lone Flanger, the old TV's with UHF channels up to channel 83 can also be used as a cell phone monitor. Then again so can my scanner. Its a shame that Americans can't legally listen to cellphones as we can here in Canada, many interesting things can be heard. I too am a hamatuer radio operator and a radio dork hehe,... 73....de VE3...

We don't get that fun anymore. The UK cellular network has been fully digital for ages now...

Yeah, I had an old Zenith TV that could tune into the 800MHz cellphone stuff. There isn't really anyone on 800 anymore as far as cellphone stuff is concerned, as far as I know. I have a few old bricks that still work on there and I can get a signal and dial but they're not activated. Back when I got my first scanner (Uniden BC-150, the yellow one), I could still receive "images" of cellphone signals on it even though it was blocked
No one even uses 49MHz cordless phones anymore. Those were never blocked on US Scanners. I outgrew that stuff after a while, but it was fun to listen to

I've picked up some old cordless sets on my radio scanner before, you'd be amazed what people still use...

Looks like it's a Radio Shack "DX-302" type HF receiver, which were new circa about 1979. I wanted one badly at the time. The cordless phones are probably the type where the handset transmitted around 49MHz & the base transmitted between about 1620 -1700KHz.
