When my grandpa (about the same age) died we found over 20K buried in the ground of his crawlspace. Make sure you really go over the house before it is demoed. When s/he eventually passed away, the task was left to the person telling the story to go through EVERY SINGLE BOOK in the house, practically page by page, to see if there was any cash inside, or just old check stubs, or nothing at all.
