Yes those are for coffins. What's more creepy, is that when you see these kind of buildings in a working Catholic cemeteries...there's still coffins inside...

I guess if the crypt is easy to access they might have been nicked.

My Dad used to solder those in the old country during his apprenticeship. Every now and then they needed to be touched up to keep their integrity.

Actually, I believe those were a temporary holding place for coffins. When people died in the winter and the ground was frozen, they were placed in this thing and buried when it warmed up and the ground softened up.
