Description
The first of two identical projectors. Projectionist would load reel 1 on projector 1 and reel 2 on projector 2. Reels would be synched so an ideal transition from projector 1 to 2 would be flawless to the eye of the movie-goer. Definitely an art, hell they have their own union!

Done by computer nowadays I think ?

Quite a skill before that though, as you say. Setting the convergance was a black art! :-o

My older sister is the Director of Development for a major (unnamed) film festival held annually in Toronto. They have an ultra-cool, 30 seat screening "theatre", complete with popcorn and union prejectionist!
This very comfy, and personal screening venue, actually utilizes two very similar projector units, rescued, refurbished, and re-installed (saved from a circa 60''s drive-in) I saw, and experienced "Swingers" there one night. We all chipped in for the union projectionist!

These types of projectors are quite rare these days. The newer set ups work by attaching all the reels together on a platter. One platter is known as the payout, and the film is taken from there, goes through the projector and is then collected on another platter. Not quite as difficult as the type of projector here...

The independent film house "Princess Theatre" in Waterloo utilizes an old projector rescued from an old drive-inn. Was talking with the projectionist prior to viewing "Supersize Me", who filled me in on the projector's origin, as it was very similar to this one.
