Pass by it on the Thruway at night to get an idea of just how big it is. I never knew either until I had to open a new store up along the 'main drag' where all the stores were.

Amsterdam is quite big actually. It has a pop of over 24, 000. It serves as a center for the smaller towns west of Amsterdam such as Fonda, Fort Plain, Canajoharie, Palantine Bridge and others. In Theodore Dressier's 'An American Tragedy" Amsterdam was a town to be visited! A place to go for entertainment and dancing. It was quite the spot way back when. It was known as the Rug Making Capital of the World before WWII.

Dancing and entertainment? Maybe that's where they got the expression "cut a rug"!
