The Mahasco powerplant/ mill. Matc's friend know from when this dates (late 1800's ) but noone seems to know what it's purpose is. It's coal fired, has a rail spur which delivers the coal, but the whole place is a massive boiler.

Actually, this building was the powerhouse for the Mahasco complex which was one of the many factories that manufactured rugs. Hence, Amsterdam's title: 'The Rug City'.

The name is MOHASCO - a contraction of Mohawk - Alexander Smith - Company. This plant was originally the McCleary, Wallin, and Crouse Carpet Mills. In 1920 after McCleary's death they merged with the Shuttleworth Brothers Carpet Mills, in the East End of Amsterdam, to form Mohawk Carpets. A later merger with Alexander-Smith Company in NYC produced MOHASCO. Manufacturing here moved out in the 1950's in favor of down South with lower cost labor and new tufted carpet manufacturing technology requiring large open floor space not suited to these old mill building designs, Corporate and design offices were here into the 1980's. Mohawk is still a major player in the floor covering industry. Most of this complex was destroyed by a huge arson fire for insurance in the 1980's; other buildings were razed since. Only the power plant and shipping/receiving warehouse (yellowish building in this series) remain.
