I believe the photographer's name is Saiga Yugi. He wrote a book on the island.

There is one thing that bothers me a bit. Where was the coal? The blurb say the site is built on a coral atoll, so I assume it's underwater, but extracting coal from the ocean floor would be kinda expensive. Somebody help me out here...

My understanding is that the coal was mined from shafts drilled down under the island, perhaps even under the ocean floor. As to expense, Japan has never been a particularly resource-rich region, so any domestic supply, i.e. not subject to foreign control, would be fully utilized.

This is not my work--I wish it was--but this came from a site I found referenced on someone's blog. It was just too good not to re-post here.

I had a black cat like that years ago except it had a small tuft of white fur on its chest. Slept with our dog and looked really funny with whitish brown hair all over it.

Mining below the ocean floor is not rare. There's been several such iron mines in the Finnish Archipelago, too. They all are abandoned now, though.
