Oil-soaked wood blocks. See http://www.uer.ca/locations/viewgal.asp?picid=21684 for a detailed view. Presumably these were laid down to absorb the vibrations from moving fresh valve castings around. The blocks have been removed as part of the demolition process.

remind me of construction class at school...I always trip over those bricks because they stick out
