I assume so, though there is no way to be certain.

I sincerely doubt it--he looks middle-aged in this picture; given that it was taken in 1948, he probably would have been born around 1900. If he were alive today, he'd be over 100 in all likelihood.
As far as his looking happy, remember the circumstances. Canada, had just come through the war and the Great Depression before that. Depending on when he started working for CN, he might well have been employed by them during the Depression. During the Depression, jobs were almost more precious than gold--remember that at that time, prices actually fell, so money went further than ever. If this man was doing this job during the war, given the importance of the Lachine canal to the industries alongside it, it may have very well been considered essential to the war effort. More than likely, no need for him to join the military and go overseas. After the war, the longest sustained economic boom in modern history began--roughly from 1945-1975. He would have likely have retired just before the canal and the industries alongside it began their decline. In his position, I would have smiled, too.

Look how crisp and clean and no caffiene the picture is. You're right ex-goose, the guys who worked in the industries considered themselves lucky, especially during the depression. Companies like Canadian Tube (dosco-sidbec0 kept men employed.

it was crazy in those days. My dad got out of the Navy in 45 and there were jobs, jobs, jobs, for guys who had been in the service. We arent ever likely to see society, almost on the whole, bending over backwards, to provide opportunity for any group, regardless of what people may think they helped accomplish!

it says that under the pic, but also you can see the canal water at the bottom of the pic, plus I think they might even have the same hand rail on the pedestrian side of that trainbridge as in the pic.
