Description
A small shelter next to the lighthouse. On the right side, not visible in the picture, are remains of a Swedish cargo ship, Torsholm, that wrecked there in the 50s. Almost nothing remains, thanks to someone who thought he could get some money off it as scrap metal in the 70s. What else... there's the officers' beach sauna which we also tried *cough* and a hall that was used to shelter bodies recovered after the car ferry Estonia sank some 40 miles south of the island.

Oh, and there's a wreck of a Victory ship, S/S Park Victory, just off the shore in the background. It's a popular diving site, one of the largest divable shipwrecks in Finland. One of our jobs was to keep an eye on it in case of unauthorized diving.

The seas around the island are littered with wrecks.

Question: how did you shoot the "main" picture for this location? The stars show a long exposure however the land doesn't look like a "night" shot at all? Filters?
Posted by Tupsumato 11/7/2008 10:27 AM | remove
  9-12 min exposure.

but during day (with a filter or extremely low-sensitivity film or pinhole camera) or during night?

If I recall correctly, I took those pictures while being in the watch between midnight and 3 am.

ok, cool. They look so daylight-y. May be the total absence of innatural light.

This shelter looks like a motar pit.

  Too small for a mortar.

Yeah, that's true. So it would have just been a hole to hide in for one soldier?

Probably. There might've been a cover.
