Location DB > Finland > Western Finland > Korppoo > Utö > I/05 > 01.jpg

1 / 25   01.jpg

Description
Emplacement for either a light grenade launcher or an anti-aircraft cannon in the southern tip of the island.

The white smoke stack on the right belongs to the power station, which had been obsolete since a power cable connecting the island to the mainland was built. We joked about it being a missile silo, the ultimate weapon of the fort of Utö, which would destroy the island in case of takeover... There's also two 130 mm tower cannons, but they are almost invisible in this picture.

The yellow building is a pilot station. The radar mast next to it is a FIKA sea watching radar which can also be used to control fire from the island's batteries. Then there's the infamous lighthouse and the village of Utö.

On the right you can barely see the observation tower that was manned around the clock from the Second World War until 2005.

It looks kind of like a mortar pit.

Some were for AA guns (23 mm "Sergei"), some for mortars. I saw no difference between them.

Alright, were the AA some sort of flak type mortar.

  Nope, just a twin-barreled 23 mm autocannon:

Of course we didn't have those anywhere - in case of emergency they would've been brought from storages in the mainland.

The mortar is an ancient 82 mm "fortification mortar". We didn't even have them either (the last were shipped out when our team arrived) nor did we get training for them:

I love your main location picture! If it wasn't for stars, i wouldn't have believed it was a long exposure pic if you've told me...
