My only guess would be to generate electricity for the caboose.

used to be when railways would retire cabooses (why isnt it cabeese) they would strip em of thier trucks, they had softer suspensions than freight car trucks. but today since cabooses are rare as pope shit there is no need

when i work 3pm-11pm, i see a caboose every other evening when CP Rail switches out our chemical cars. The short haul guys out of Fort Edward NY have to run up the line backwards and use the caboose as lead. Basically two guys on the caboose with spotlights, an airhorn and a radio.

Most cabooses are used as "shoving platforms" now and are usually totally empty inside. Some are even welded or locked shut.

Not sure why I don't have the set on here yet but the Essex Terminal Railway has 2 cabooses in pristine condition. They even replace the glass when stupid kids smash it out.
