Location DB > United States > California > South Bay > Dumbarton Rail Corridor > Newark Slough Swing Bridge > Control room

16 / 23   Control room

Description
The control room on top of the bridge. A bridge tender would sit in here all day watching for oversized boats coming through the channel, and if he had clearance from the railroad he would open the bridge to let the boat through. Not a bad job.

There are lots of different things to notice here. One is the cranks and driveshaft by the door that extends down towards the base. It is possible that the machinery used to turn this large bridge is still inside. Another thing to notice is the stairs up to the hut and the flimsy barrier meant to prevent entry to the the place. The wood is also obviously affected by the harsh sun on it constantly, unlike the wall on the right which is hardly ever in direct sunlight and still retains most of its paint. And finally the insane amount of vandalism and tagging on this structure. How do they get onto this thing so easily?! There must be a lot of ninjas in Newark, and Don is one of them.
