  I think at one time, because this was the old Southern Pacific Line (now owned by UP), there was always a guards shanty or otherwise known as a breakhouse for the workmen. I see no other use for it as there are no sidings or derailment switches nearby. Since cabooses were a common sight then, this would be the place to allow the workers to trade shifts for the operation of the bridge. (and that's my best guess from being on the rails all these years)

  Sounds as good as any other idea, though it would seem a little cramped to me.

  I'll have to find the pic of the shanty on the Cahill Yard in San Jose for you to see. Also very cramped, but it happened. I'll post in your thread.
