After the 3+ hour hike, to and from the mine plus walking around in the dark. I think GreyDeath died a little more.

Nice gallery, but I am curious about this mine.... Is it still there, is it safe enough to journey into?

Lots concrete ruins remain. There's a huge open pit where the shaft collapsed. The upper and lower tailings ponds still exist, and there's lots of interesting desbris in the upper tailings pond, including old TNT boxes.
Unfortunately, it's a super bitch getting in there with all the downed trees. Until they're cleared, I'd stay clear. But if you're up for a good hike, then it's a good location to check out. Definately makes for some good photos. =]

I would imagine that none of the underground infrastructure is accessible. There a huge amount of regulations involved in a metal mine closure, in fact a detailed closure plan must be submitted before the mine is opened. The most relevant to UE are clauses pertaining to the stability of the closed site. Since the "observation period" after a site closure can be up to 100 years, the common practice for open shaft mines is to fill as much as possible with concrete to avoid future litigation. Some federal and provincial guidelines can be found here: http://www.ec.gc.c...&offset=7&toc=show

The mine opened and closed before any of that stuff came in to existence.
