There are no words to properly descrobe how incredibly flat Fargo is. The land the city is built on is at almost the same level as the river. If a drain starting a mile away from the river were to slope downhill normally the whole way, it would end up well below the level of the river. To solve this problem, the drains still slope downwards, but every now and then, they stop at a pumping station where a powerful pump lifts the water up several feet and expels it out into a section of drain that starts back at ground level again. There are many of these around Fargo.

So the pumps... they are electric or gasoline, or what?

Electric. They make a delightful whirring noise. They run all the time, except when there is absolutely no water or the trench is frozen solid. The pumps could be considered an essential part of the drainage system. In a flash flood (even lots of heavy rain can do that) there are two huge gate things that open up to let the wall of water flow through on it's own power. Once the flow drops to be too low to flow through the gates on it's own, they close and the pump starts doing it's thing.

How does a pump work? Archimedes Screw, pistons, or something else?

I'm not sure. The building above it is roundish, and has a double person door on the back. I'm not about to crawl into the pipe to find out either. Maybe this winter while it's shut down I'll crawl in from the back and have a look-see.
