These are the ones by the Maid in the Mist docks, right? (I think I saw the boats in the last image). Nice little find!

Yup, those be them.
Unfortunately my batteries died, so I couldn't photograph the docked boats (all up on tracks for winter) up close, as I explored.

Thats pretty sketchy. So the only thing holding these cars up are the wire cables? Nothing wedged in beneath them?

Yup, hence why I was too afraid to enter the cablecars themselves - no point adding more weight to what's clearly an abandoned and disused cable. On the other hand, no real risk crawling beneath them on the tracks, since they'd been there for years, the next ten minutes were a pretty safe bet as long as I didn't budge them :P

Thanks, it was steep as hell to climb down, but well worth it - especially seeing the Maid of the Mists afterwards - heavily suggested to anybody who finds themselves bored on a trip to the ultimate tourist trap.

You are correct, these cars were used to transport visitors from the ticket centre (at the foot of Clifton Hill) down to the Maid of the Mist docks. The cable-car system was abandoned when the new Maid-of-the-Mist Mall was built (also at the foot of Clifton Hill) which delivers passengers to the Maid of the Mist landing via elevators and a tunnel (through the restaurants and gift shops, of course!). I rode the incline railway down to the Maid of the Mist docks frequently in my younger years - a much nicer ride than the current subterrainian side-show.

I'm pretty sure it was shut down the first time I went to Niagara Falls in 1997. You sure you're not thinking of the thing that takes you over the whirlpool? It's a gondola car that hangs from a cable overhead.

Oh yeah, as of 2 years ago, they have one of these near the new casino. It takes you from Fallsview Blvd down to the River Road near the Table Rock building.

Yes there still exists another "incline railway" near the parking entrance to the Casino.

My wife and I stayed at the Fallsview Marriott for our honeymoon in June of '04 and that was the quickest way down the hill. Walking, it took about 30 minutes because you had to go all the way down to Murray Street by the casino.

They featured one of these in an episode of that dreadful Urban Explorers show on Discovery Channel. Seeing it in operation was pretty sweet.. I'd love to see this thing restored.

Wow, I rode this when I was a kid (about 6 or 7), and had quite the bad fall there. Smashed my face on the steps getting onto them. Didnt know they were abandoned now. Defintely a must do trip for me.
