Textured sheetrock (drywall). It's a heavy texture that kinda looks like popcorn is stuck all over the ceiling.

it's called stipple, and it's a textured goo you spray on the ceiling with a gun. They also have pain on versions.

Yeah, but I've never seen the pain(t) on versions that really look like popcorn.

I lived in a house that had this type of ceiling, except it had silver glitter stuff in it too. Lovely effect...

I've tried pain(t) on stucco and it was a pain to apply. Shutterbug and I ended up using our hands. Made for an interesting pattern.

Or you could just paint on regular household white glue onto the ceiling, and smash popcorn into it!

I had to join just to point out that officially the textured ceiling seen here is a crappy version of a "California Ceiling" (aka "California Textured Ceiling"), so called because of it's immense popularity in California back in the day. But "stucco", "popcorn" and "ugly-ass shit" are also accepted terms.

I'm a drywaller by trade and we specialize in texturing, "California Knockdown" texturing mainly which is a version of this only smoothed down a bit by running a trowel or knife(we actually use an industrial kitchen squeegee now) across it when it is set-up(dried enough for the trowel/knife not to just scrape it all off but wet enough to actually smooth it out).

It can also be bought as a wallpaper, but compared to the real thing the wallpaper is shit both in looks and durability. The paint-on stuff is known by various names coined by the companies that produce them, but they are all based off of the "California Ceiling" concept.

California Knockdown has been in very high demand over the past decade or so, lucky for us being one of only two crews who do it around here(and we do it better than them ... lol), and it's because not only does it look better than this crap it's easier to clean or repaint if needed as well due to it's smoother finish.

Anyways, just thought I'd point that out since there seems to be a big discussion about it here.

Now I need to go find those other threads I wanted to post in but was too lazy to join to do it, till now.

Cheerios.
