the quebec pavillion was butchered when the base was widened and the glass made opaque, the entire architectural vision was destroyed

Well, building a pedway from the France Pavillion to the Quebec Pavillion, plus the underground parking, which narrow the level of the water behind the France Pavillion kind of killed the concept too for me.

it was a complete disrespect to the architecture of the era, we are doing to these buildings now what we complain people did to the beutiful buildings of the past. to us they are not "old" or historic but one day someone will realize how much we butchered them

Yes, I agree. Although someone could also argue those buildings were supposed to be demolished 37 years ago...

I just hope they don't move the Casino, cause then the future of these beautiful buildings would be in jeopardy again... :(

  But explorable maybe?Seriously I agree .

Well, security-wise, this is top of its class, being a casino. So unfortunately for us, if the place gets abandonned, they'll prolly leave the existing security systems on until the place rott and they have to cut electricity. So exploration-wise, I doubt it would be accessible anytime soon... :(

sadly an exhibit hall like the palais de la civilisation would probably never happen here again
Posted by maZe 11/2/2005 2:48 PM | remove
Hence - they moved the centre canadien d'architecture cause it was too far from downtown...

Oups, I mean the Musée d'art contemporain... which was a former Expo 67 building...

I had forgotten it was over there, but it was known to be temporary and they did pretty well going to Place Des Arts. But it is awful the way they let things go. After all the whole concept there was public space, Terre Des Hommes blah blah blah. But Casinos and Race Tracks became the prioity

the only building i wont complain about its demolition was the autostade, when the alouettes played there some wore surgical masks because of the shadflys, hope the impact take that into account with thier stadium
Posted by Charlie_Dunver 3/19/2006 7:10 PM | remove
excellent point, but the developer's don't have to live there so I doubt it is in their brochures
Posted by Charlie_Dunver 3/19/2006 7:11 PM | remove
and BTW the autostade was a horrible location. At least it was democratic - it was awkward to get to for EVERYONE!

I kinda liked that soulless, ugly construction. My dad worked at the Port HQ at Cite du Havre and I used to spend hours farting around there waiting for him to get off work.

saw Pink Floyd there so can it be all bad? LOL

In '75? You dog. I didn't get to see them until two summers later at the Big Owe.

heh heh, I guess it was if not in 73!

But I have heard the Big Owe show was the greatest show ever seen in Montreal! (sadly I was living in BC at the time)

I didn't smoke anything at the Stade Olympic show and yet, I'm probably still a bit stone today because of it. Yeah, it was THAT bad.

You got that right, Charlie. The 'Animals' tour it was, complete with giant inflatable pig. We had the crappiest 700s seats in the house to start with, but thanks to binocular aversion and a general state of drug induced boldness, we somehow managed to make it within 100 feet of the stage by mid show. That was easily one of the highlights of my concert going career, and I've seen many.

Still, the '70s in BC couldn't have been that bad?

well, I did see a Supertramp show in Vancouver that was special, but the UK bands didnt stop there like they did in Montreal.

For me it was probably Son Volt at the Cabaret in 1997. That Jay Farrar guy can't sing for shit, but he sure as hell knew how to channel Neil Young that night.

Even better, was the Shadowy Men at Metropolis sometime in that same decade. Hours and hours of two minute long guitargasmic ditties, all played to a near empty house. It's not often that you get to rest your elbow on that stage with breathing room to spare.
