Those, if I'm not mistaken, are the ends of what are called "hosebags"; they are basically the air brakes (assuming the picture is located between two cars).

the center hose is a airbrake hose "train pipe" the others are MU hoses for when multiple logos are lashed up

there is still these hoses, they control the independant brakes and such they work in conjunction with the MU cable
