  I did.

We once made a little detour trough the western part of Босна и Херцеговина, going north from Split to Banja Luka and then west to Zagreb. It was very weird to see all the villages, then suddenly realize that all the holes were really bullet holes. Also, we stopped at a grave (of WW I Partizans), and talked a bit to an old man. We asked him why some areas weren't cultivated - because of mines.

The whole area was very weird: Shot houses, soldiers on every street, but also a lot of construction of new houses and bridges.

I agree all of this is weird. Croatia had less trouble when it came to rebuilding the country after war but still, you get that weird vibe when you take the bus from a major city to another. The bus ride from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo was amazing. Such a big contrast between the beautiful landscape and the burnt down houses on the road.

I just heard an accuintance of my dad lost his leg due to stepping on a land mine in Hrvatska, he was looking for a place to paraglide. The tourist flyers said it was safe, yet locals knew it was unsafe.

Sadly enough, it's going to be like that for many years. My Dad told me a couple of pretty scary stories involving unexploded ordinance in post WWII Europe where he grew up. There are also parts of Germany that you have to have Explosives experts check your property before you excavate for unexploded shells left over from both World Wars.

Landmines: the best way to screw up a country for a long time. In Bosnia, they estimate that the country will be cleared in about 30 years. Until then, hundreds die each year.

The mine the guy stepped on was also presumably a WWII one.

Thanks to everyone. I strongly recommend you to go down there sometime. It's probably going to change for the worst in a coupe of years. Today, Sarajevo is almost tourists-free and it's one of the most authentic and cheap city I ever visited.

You know, U2 wanted to play a concert here around the time of the conflict but couldn't for obvious reasons. In 1997 they did play a show here and Bono yelled "Fuck the past, kiss the future, viva Sarajevo!"
