That's odd... It's not a fridge compressor (no lagging) and looks to be some kinda air / gas compressor.
It's f-ing huge too....

Ah wait - that's an industrial compressor for powering tools and equipment that runs on compressed air.
/I think.

turbo, i worked in a restaurant that used to be a grocery store, we actually had a compressor similar to this in the basement and it was run to where refrigerators had been, i at first didnt believe it could be refrigeration related but...

The odd thing is it was on the top floor..and the big refrigerator was in the basement. But as it was a grocery store before,it might be for all the small coolers all around.Or it's to keep the snow man from melting...

well most grocery stores keep the refrigeration equipment in penthouses on the roof or in a second floor area at the back, remember all those big coolers on the floor of the grocery store and the lockers in the back rarely have compressors in them they are plumbed to big compressors somewhere else in the building, keeps the heat off the sales floor and in turn keeps AC costs down

Your right, it is a refrigerant compressor. That's the business I'm in. It is what we call an "iron horse" compressor. That black canister on the high pressure tube is a dryer to help keep moisture out of the system. And nostra-youppi, your exactly right about how grocery stores work their refrigeration systems.

What a compressor! I'm sure its an ammonia one for sturdy refrigeration systems for a grocery or meat shop!
