  For the one that wonders, it's a sky observatory. Mayas were one of the most advanced civilization regarding the study of stars and planets.

  It's fact- they developed a thorough calendar system and many pyramids and temples are based (much like egyptians) off celestial locations and alignments.

  the modern calender is most closely related to the mayan calender.
