Front room fireplace, the curved centrepiece is a slab of slate. No plaster & lathe or drywall in this house - just strange compressed paper covering every wall.

I don't think it's asbestos as it hasn't become brittle, just damp.

  I found a picture of asbestolux (http://www.ask-abs.co.uk/img/insulbrd.jpg), it doesn't look like the same material and it appears to be *very* brittle.

  Aye, that's asbestolux board!

Asbestolux sheeting was mixed with some kinda paper / plastic combo and kinda looks like thick wallpaper... It was also made into stick on tiles IIRC ??
