Hope hasn't been named Hope since 1974. FYI - The township of Hope first broke ground back in 1972, along with other close townships Clarke (now Clarington) and Darlington (now Clarington aswell). Hope township was named after Colonel Henry Hope, who was a member of the Legislative Council of Canada (Hope gate in Quebec is also named in his honor). In 1974 Hope township was transfered to Northnumberland county and is now known as the Municipality of Port Hope.
