Interesting. I'm guessing that it had just a glazed/solid roof.

The columns look ornate. That must have been beautiful in its day.

A conservatory.

It's more likely that it was a greenhouse - the metal framework within was to hold plants.

A greenhouse this close to a right angled wall join would be a strange thing indeed.

Strange yeah, but I don't see any other reason for plant holders taking up most of the area inside it.

It looks a bit wee and cramped for a conservatory.

Do you see a reason for having straw in the house? Maybe they are just randomly placed there.
I still think it would likely be a conservatory.
Why would you build your greenhouse where two sides of it are blocked off to the natural light so important for a greenhouse?

Yeah I see your point about the greenhouse PD.

Looks about 12m2, no? A greenhouse in 1836 (date of construction, right?) would take up a more prominent site in the actual garden.

Would a conservatory have been built in such an enclosed location though?

Took a look at it this afternoon. Think there had been a greenhouse on theback of the farmworkers house with the walled garden where the doocot is. The sun does get to this side of the house but looks more like a conservatory of sorts to me.
