Decommissioned Coast Guard ship burns October 11, 2008 - 8:27 am By: Matt Scott - News 95.7 A decommissioned Coast Guard vessel sent a large plume of smoke into the air over Halifax Harbour, early Saturday morning. About 5 a.m., fire crews were called to the Dartmouth marine slips at the end of Canal Street. They arrived to find a 50 ft. out-of-service Coast Guard boat fully engulfed in flames. Halifax Regional Fire spokesperson Dave Meldrum tells News95.7, there were five heavy engine companies working the fire, and were considering bringing in additional resources. The Dept. of National Defence were on scene as well with their firefighting tugboat. Fire crews expected to be at the scene of the fire most of the day. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
