Completed in 1922, the Atkinson Community House opened in southwest Detroit. It was a community center with a pool, gym, auditorium, and boxing ring with athletic fields outside. In 1926, it was renamed for councilman John Kronk who assisted in getting the community center built and opened. Boxing brought fame to the Kronk Center beginning in the 1970s and into the early 1990s. Boxing coach Emmanuel Steward trained numerous boxers in the Kronk Center basement, guiding many of them to amateur and world championships. By 2005, the Kronk Center was the oldest community center in the city and its age showed. It was slated to be closed but Steward kept the gym open with his own money until September 2006 when the copper piping was stolen from the building and it was forced to close. Steward moved his gym to Dearborn and the Kronk Center became heavily vandalized in his absence. A fire in October 2017 destroyed the building and the remnants were demolished in September 2018.
