Massive gum production factory with many levels and a great view from the top of the water tower. The whole building has a great smell of different types of gum. Lots of history left behind.

Demolition of the century-old Wrigley chewing gum factory began last December, but the former home of one of Chicago's oldest and most important names will live on through photographs. The 175,000 square foot factory was built in 1911 and in use until 2006, closing shortly after the company moved into its Global Innovation Center on Goose Island. Previous plans to turn the huge 30 acre site at 3535 South Ashland into a high tech hub were axed when the property was sold in February 2012. Ironically enough, just yesterday President Obama formally announced the creation of a high tech research and manufacturing hub on Goose Island, where Wrigley is currently based. The founding Wrigley family sold the company to Mars in 2008. The takeover, valued at some $23 billion, united two iconic US companies, each of which already had a substantial global presence. Wrigley became a private, stand-alone subsidiary of Mars, relieving it of the costs and constraints of being a public company. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway helped finance the takeover by Mars and owned a more than 10% interest in Wrigley.
