Springfield Lake Sanitarium was constructed in 1915 as a tuberculosis hospital. In 1922, a children's ward known as Sunshine Cottage was added. The complex was rechristened Edwin Shaw Hospital in 1934 after Edwin Copeland Shaw. Sunshine Cottage closed in 1947 and its buildings were used by Children's Service to house abused or neglected children. By 1959, TB was under control by antibiotics and Edwin Shaw began accepting other patients. It was taken over by Akron General Hospital and became mostly an inpatient rehabilitation facility. In the 1960s, Sunshine Cottage was expanded and became known as Sunshine Village until its closure in 1985. Afterward, that building housed the hospital's outpatient rehab facilities. Rehab facilities were eventually moved to Cuyahoga Falls and Edwin Shaw closed in 2010. Power was cut in 2012 and the buildings were boarded up.

The county has been trying to sell the property for several years with no success due to the hefty price tag to either renovate or demolish the buildings. A 2015 proposal to create a haunted attraction was turned down. The county plans to demolish the buildings in the summer of 2016 to make to property more attractive to prospective buyers. Demolished in 2017.
