Prospect Place was built in 1856 by an abolitionist named G. W. Adams. It is a 29-room 3-story mansion that was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. It contains a library, bedrooms, servant quarters, three parlors, a ballroom and cupola on the roof. After decades of abandonment, it is now being restored and visitors are welcome.

George Willison Adams was born in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1800. His family moved to Muskingum County, Ohio in 1808 where he grew up to run a mill in the nearby town of Adams Mills. In 1856, his 29-room mansion known as Prospect Place between the towns of Trinway and Dresden was completed after his previous home was consumed in an arson fire. Adams was a staunch abolitionist and Prospect Place soon became a stop on the Underground Railroad. The cupola on the roof would be lit by a lantern if it was safe for runaway slaves to take shelter in the mansion’s basement. After Adams died in 1879, the house was passed down through the family until the 1960s when it became neglected. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the mansion was thoroughly abandoned, suffering from vandalism and structural problems. It was purchased by Dave Longaberger in 1988 to prevent its imminent demolition. After Longaberger died of cancer, the house was purchased by a descendant of its original owner, George Jeffrey Adams. Since 2001, he has been renovating Prospect Place room by room, a work that is still in progress. It has also been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
