It consists of large, art deco skyscrapers, mostly built around the 1930's. They were constructed using WPA funding. Despite the huge boost to the local economy, the hospital was entirely to large and never fully utilized. After closing in 1988, the buildings were bought by a developer who is currently renovating them. It is said to be the largest restoration project in the world, as well as the largest complex of art deco buildings in the world.
