     History
Nothing to see here anymore, but here's a little back story for posterity...

During WWI, Sir Christopher Cradock, a rear-admiral of the British Royal Navy, was ordered to seek and destroy the fleet of German Admiral Maximilian von Spee, a much stronger force than his own. On November 1, 1914, Cradock found von Spee off the coast of Chile and engaged. In what became known as the Battle of Coronel, all of Cradock’s men were killed, and he went down with his ship.

Stateside, a neighborhood in Portsmouth, Va. - home of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard - was named after Cradock shortly after his death. And in 1920, a high school bearing his name opened there. It was the home of the Admirals.

The final structure at the Cradock High School site was built in 1954. Known as “The Dock,” it graduated some 8,000 students before it was closed in 1992 when the city of Portsmouth decided to consolidate high schools.

After that, the school sat abandoned while the city tried to figure out what to do with it. A small part of the property was used as a recreational center.

After more than two decades of decay, Cradock High was torn down in June 2014 to make way for a housing development.
