At the turn of the century, there was a very large, Mormon run resort / amusement park there called Saltair. It features "the world's largest dance floor", several roller coasters, a train ride, and an extended pier out into the Salt Lake. The resort was intended as a 'safe place' where young mormons could go for dates and fun without worrying about the utter horrers of the real world like caffeine or loud music. The resort was strongly criticized by the church for selling tea and alcohol, as well as for being open on Sundays. They sold it in 1906, and Saltair burned to the ground in 1925. However, a new park was built at the same location, this time, including a movie theater and a larger dance floor. In the 1930's, another fire struck the resort, causing $100,000 in damage, and then, during World War 2, fuel rationing caused the closure of the park. After the war, the park re-opened, but closed it's doors for good in 1958. In 1970, an arson fire set on the dance floor completely destroyed the complex. In 1981, with the construction of I-80, interest in the park rose again, and a third Saltair was built. It was built out of a scrapped air force hanger originally located a mile away. It never really took off, and by the 90's it was all but abandoned. Occasionally concerts will be held there, but very rarely. All that remains of the original grandeour is the skeleton of one of the railroad cars used to ferry visitors from Salt Lake City to Saltair.

The train car was scrapped in mid 2012 and the building was subsequently demolished. See the web link for info about the rail car. The comments in the article mention that the building had been demolished.
