The mine head is a large multi-storey wooden building constructed at the hillside. The lower floors are occupied by the remains of the cable-car system that was used to transport coal to the harbour. The middle part has conveyors and storage silos while in the upper parts there are at least two entrances to the mine, both blocked by multi-year ice, and some offices.

The mine was founded in 1913 when the Arctic Coal Company began mining coal in a second mine, referred to as "Mine 2", in Longyearbyen. The mine was taken over by the Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani in 1918 and production began in 1921. After several years of high production the price of coal dropped and the mine was at the verge of closure. A second head, "Mine 2B", was opened in 1937 further in the valley. In 1943 shells from the German battleship Scharnhorst set the mine on fire. The mine fire was not completely extinguished before 1962. Production was restarted after the war and continued until the winter of 1967-1968.

All traces of human activity in Svalbard dating from before 1946 are protected. While safe from demolition, the buildings will eventually collapse on their own or be bought down by an avalanche.
