Massive steam power plant, half is a generator room with no levels and great lighting for photography. The other half is a very cramped and rusty series of floors made from metal grating, allowing visibility of all at once above and below. This area has a mind-boggling assortment of random stairways, ladders, pipe structures, and at times confusing machinery and setups. While extremely fascinating, this site does harbor a large amount of potential danger and requires a great deal of caution and alertness while navigating. Almost everything you come in contact with is rusty, jagged, or unstable [many sections of floor, even metal grating, are weak]. Stay focused.

Multiple floors of odd machinery and unique pipe structures. The metal grating allows view up and downwards of all floors and the random stairways, ladders, descents, and obscure obstacles make for an incredibly dangerous jungle gym for exploration. The generators are in a massive room as tall as the entire building, which, like the rest, is full of all sorts of obscure machinery and devices. Two areas permit roof access for shots of the smokestack and a good area to rest and get air, providing you pay attention to weak areas.

Created in 1928 to power six paper mills, a couple of which remain active in Fitchburg. When the mill industry declined there was no longer a use for the plant and it was closed down in 1998, leaving over 800 jobless.

The site is being slowly cleaned, in the past year soil was removed and paved over. Fences are up and construction vehicles come and go. While the surrounding trails have standing plaques with historical information, the entrance has an unlocked gate that warns to keep out and the signs mention the site is to be cleaned for low-income housing.
