Despite school rolls showing over 600, and the overwhelming majority of students listed as “Creoles of color”, The Fillmore School for Boys once again becomes a white-only school. 1880 – The school begins admission of both boys and girls and becomes known simply as The Fillmore. 1883 – The school is renamed McDonogh No. 16, after receiving estate funds from a long time public school benefactor John McDonogh. 1962 – After being white-only for 85yrs, African Americans are once again allowed to enroll. 1978 – The school closes due to declining enrollment.
