While there are only four stone buildings surviving & much of the old Camp site is now residential homes & I-15, if you poke around, you'll find other small pieces of evidence of the camp & its inhabitants -- old graffiti, bits of broken pots, etc. Also, the workers at this CCC Camp are responsible for the construction of many roadways, stone retention walls, tunnels, etc. in the region's cities, forests & parks that locals & visitors still see & use today.

Those the dozens of wooden structures are long-gone, the four stone buildings (minimally renovated) remaining make it the best-preserved CCC Camp in Utah.

Not a lot of visitors, so expect the neighboring residents to watch you.

In response to the Great Depression of the late 1920s & early 1930s, one of presidential candidate Franklin Roosevelt's major campaign promises was to try to get people working and the economy rolling again. Shortly after being elected in 1933, he created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Very similar to the military, because in fact the program was run by the US Army, the CCC recruited mostly jobless young men who had family depending on them, & relocated them to Camp locations scattered about the USA where they'd work in teams performing labor to create & improve local infrastructure under the supervision of experienced foremen. CCC members were paid in room & board + $5 per month, and $25 per month sent home to their family. They were guaranteed 6 months of work, but could be re-enlisted for up to two years total. This CCC Camp, formally known as CCC Company 585, Camp #SCS-7 in the little town of Leeds was established in 1933 and the workers used rock (from the nearby abandoned mining town known as Silver Reef) to construct or improve older constructions such as bridges, roads, fire lookout towers, etc. for the Soil Conservation Service & US Forest Service. The camp closed in 1942 -- young men could were now needed to go off & fight in WW-II or work in defense plants instead & the economic depression was ended by the need for military troops and a military-industrial complex. Most of the old wooden structures at the CCC Camp were sold off & quickly broken-down or moved elsewhere, and eventually houses and even Interstate-15 were built atop what had once been the CCC Camp. The four remaining structures in what'd been the Administrative area probably only survived because they were built of stone, and are on or alongside a hill, not suitable to have been turned into farmland or housing. At some point in time, probably the 1970s, the Town of Leeds realized the remains had historic significance, and took steps to protect & interpret them with some nice historical markers and photographs.

Probably nothing major, unless it becomes a national historic site & gets federal or state funding. Hopefully the sleepy little town of Leeds will continue to take care of it & the vandals will stay away.
