After my trip to the Scarborough Archives I had found that some of this info I had posted about this location was incorrect. From the resources that I had looked at, this is actually not the John Pearce homestead and sawmill. This is in fact the George Pearse homestead. In the 1861 cencus records it states that George was a farmer. John Pearce did actually build this homestead{date unknown}. According to some members of the Historical committee John didn't run a mill. After furthur investigation in some local records of the mills in the area, Pearse's name did show up. We suspect that the infamous Kirkhams Mill was owned and ran by John in the late 1880's. {Info is not fully clear yet, I will update when the full facts are obtained}

John was one of three brothers. John, James and George. The three brothers left their home in Tavistock, Devon, England to come to Canada and farm. James was the oldest brother of the three. In the early 1840's, he was a stonemason by trade and worked in Toronto. John and James both considered themselves as gentlemen. They both had drivers to transport them in their carriages. George was the youngest brother and resided with John. George assisted John at the 200 acre sawmill. The machinery that ran the sawmill was bought in the United States. The family brought the machinery up by boat, across Lake Ontario, and up the Rouge River.

The TRCA is currently using this property {Friends of the Rouge Valley Water Shed} to help rejuvenate this land. There are tonnes of tree planting tools and trees on this lot. The TRCA has planted hundreds of trees in this area since the early 2000's.
