  •  Interesting Features
This is one of the few drains in Almata. It is used as emergency conduit when the river can't take any more water. The conduit itself is an explorable rectangular concrete tunnel. The outfall consists of 3 metal pipes. It empties out in the Sairan lake. The slope is not always great, so water speed might be moderate in most places.

Usually, rain water in Almata is removed through open irrigation channels called "aryk". Aryks get clogged frequently. They run beside roads and are great for falling in.

You may also see a bunch of concrete cabins along the concrete stairs. These were used to rest, or to have small parties. In the Soviet times, the place (including the lake) was clean and well-maintained. The bridge had railings too.

     History
Small Almatinka river makes its way through the city all the way from the mountains. Frequent overflows due to melting glaciers make it necessary to have alternative water channels. This is what Three Pipes was built for.
The river falls into the Sairan lake that could be emptied by opening a shaft on its northern end (rectangular spot on google map).

     Future Plans
The place is in a state of disrepair. Unless something drastic happens to it (like a collapse during a mudslide), the city won't bother.
