The brick foundations are the only things left. They are covered in moss and surrounded by pine needles and pine cones from the surrounding forest. Steel bars that strengthened the walls still protrude from the ground where the foundations remain.

Well... it's free, no fences. It's almost as though it's welcomed for you to explore. Granted there's not much left, but the history is pretty cool. It's a pretty place too!

The massive forests of virgin pines were virtually untouched in this region of Texas for hundreds, if not thousands of years, until the turn of the 20th century. In the 1870s, a man named Jesse H. Ratcliff came to this area of southeast Texas and established a saw mill in the 1880s adjacent to what is now Ratcliff Lake. A post office was established nearby as well, which was named Ratcliff in his honor, thus a town was born. In 1901 he sold the mill to the Central Coal and Coke Company, which built a massive lumber operation where Ratcliff's once was. The town of Ratcliff flourished as the 4-C's Mill continued to be successful. However, the mill cut an estimated 120,000 acres of forest in just 18 years without providing enough time for reforestation. In 1920, the mill closed its doors. In the 1930s, a reforestation effort was implemented, as the Davy Crockett National Forest was established. Since then, the building has crumbled and all that is left are the brick foundations and steel rebar.
