Toronto is the name of a portage route that lead along the Humber River (The Toronto Carrying-Place Trail). The first settlements in the area were French when they established Fort Rouillé in 1750 on what is now the Exhibition Grounds, but abandoned it nine years later (1759).
The area was once again settled by an influx of United Empire Loyalists fleeing the newly formed United States of America. In 1787 the British purchased a quarter of a million acres of land in the area of Toronto and was subsiquently chosen by the governer (John Graves Simcoe) on July 29th, 1793 to be the seat of the government for the province of Upper Canada. The town that Simcoe established was called York. It was built in the large protected bay formed by the Toronto Island, which at this time was more of a penisula so the only opening was at the western end. Fort York was built to defend the harbor. The town proper was building closer to the eastern end of the harbor near what is now Parliment Street. Notable streets that were built during this time were Dundas (York to Hamilton), Kingston Road (York to Montreal), and Yonge Street (North to Lake Simcoe (then Lake Toronto)).
During the war of 1812 the Americans invaded and burned the city, the troops stationed at Fort York realizing that they couldn't defend the fledgling captial set fire to the magazine and retreated. The Americans finished the job burning most of the capital, after most of their force was killed in the magainze explosion at the Fort. The result of this was the British buringing of Washington DC. A second fort was built when the US retreated from York, a bigger one which sucessfully repulsed a second American attack in 1814, this fort is still standing today, although the Lake is much further away today.
The city of Toronto was officially established on March 6th, 1834 to distiguish it from New York City.
The later 1800s saw Toronto's growth explode from 30,000 in 1851 to 181,000 in 1891. The greatest cause of this increase was the influx of Irish fleeing from the potato famine. It was also during this period that Toronto's extensive transit system was built including the streetcar network. Also Grand Trunk and Great Northern Railway built Union Station (This Union Station is not the one that currently stands in City, that station opened in 1927).
In 1904 a devistating fire wiped out most of the downtown but the city rebounded quickly and rebuilt that which was lost. The Prince Edward Viaduct was built during this time to link the city across the ravine through which the Don River runs. The viaduct was built with a lower deck for trains, which saved the city in 1966 when the subway started using it. This linked all the smaller communities together, allowing the city to fill out for the first half of the century. The Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto was created in 1954 by an act of Parliment.
It was in the 1970s that most of the skyscrapers today were built, which caused havoc with the TV and Radio transmitters at the time. The solution, Toronto's famous icon, the CN Tower.
The next major step in the history of the city was in 1998 when the six municipalities that made up Metro Toronto were amalgamated into a single city, Toronto, or the Megacity.
