A string of four '60s-style buildings that cut a swath through downtown like icebreakers. The lower floors contain markets, and the upper levels are residential. The markets specialise in electronics, especially surveillance equipment, and it's easy to find porn videos there. Oh yeah, and broken old arcade machines. Sampoong Sangga has been converted into Hotel Best Western Premier Kukdo, a pretty fancy place.

Completed in 1967, Sewoon Arcade contained one of the first high-rise apartments in Korea, as well as some of the first elevators. The row of four buildings was designed by famed architect (and patron saint of UE Korea) Kim Swoo-Geun to modernise Seoul's downtown area. The lower levels were perfect for markets, and the upper levels were apartments. The project was considered a failure, possibly because it created a giant wall along downtown's eastern edge.

One of the most prominent campaign pledges of the mayor-elect of Seoul, Oh Se-hoon, was to renovate the dilapidated Sewoon shopping district. The plan to redevelop this area is part of a larger strategy of creating a green corridor from Jongmyo to Namsan. ...And Mayor Oh crashed and burned. We don't know the current status of the Seun Green Belt project.
